With the SLS Black Series already an established icon and an “instant classic”, Mercedes-AMG knew they had to pull out all the stops to not only produce a car that would surpass the SLS in every way, but a car that would surpass the already revered AMG GT-R and GT-R Pro in every way. The GT series development had been so successful, that AMG found themselves in a situation where the benchmark they’d set to overcome was produced in-house. The other hurdle was, for a car to wear the “Black Series” badge it had to be incredibly special and not just a marketing exercise. With only 5 previous editions, it is not a badge that AMG wanted tarnished by bringing something mediocre to the party. What this meant was going through absolutely EVERYTHING in the “C190” GT platform and improving it not just a little bit, but significantly. More power, more aero, more grip, and much less weight. The biggest change to the existing platform was to the M178 4.0-litre, dry-sumped twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The change from a cross-plane to a flat-plane crank meant a more responsive and freer revving engine. Putting out 537kw and 800Nm meant devastating performance numbers; 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h in less than 9, and a top speed of 325 km/h. As you would expect, each Black Series V8 is fully constructed and personally signed by a single AMG engine builder, with only half-a-dozen of AMG’s top technicians entrusted with this most prestigious of jobs. This singularly capable power-plant works in concert with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that has been reinforced to handle the high torque output of the Black Series engine. It’s housed in a remarkable carbon-fibre subframe and, like the engine, has active mounts. The aero package received just as much attention as the driveline did, a complete and extensive redesign of nearly every panel aside from the doors along with extensive carbon-fibre use means the GT Black Series is very nearly a GT3 car. The immense rear wing has mechanical adjustment, and an active centre flap which can deploy up to 20 degrees. An expandable front splitter, the large outlets on the bonnet and the rear wing produce enormous downforce of up to 400kg. The suspension, brakes and pretty much everything you can think of was either lightened, strengthened or redesigned. The end result of this fastidious attention to every detail over the Black Series program was a car that weighed 90kg less than the GT-R pro, whilst having an engine 25% more powerful. One figure speaks to this more than anything, the power to weight ratio of 349kw per tonne, a massive leap over the 263kw per tonne of the GT-R Pro. When the GT Black Series hit the Nurburgring it astounded and astonished everyone. A lap time of 6:43.616 made GT the fastest production car in the world around the Green Hell. As a testament to this amazing time, two years later there are only two cars that have bettered it, the Porsche GT2RS MR (which is not a factory production car in the spec that set the record) or the AMG One hyper-car, an F1 engined monster. CHROME TEMPLE is proud to present this stunning Magma Beam car which has been protected by a matte finish full protective film.
